  17. <p>     Retired auto executives say the darnedest things. In his
  18. forthcoming book, A Better Idea, former Ford chief DONALD
  19. PETERSEN writes that his company's quality improvements during
  20. the '80s failed to put the automaker ahead of the Japanese.
  21. "Right now, I rate Toyota the best, followed by Honda, and Mazda
  22. does a great job [too]."
